The dream of most people who work corporate jobs is to work from home. Some are tired of the commute to work, some just want to spend more time with their family, while others just want to enjoy the freedom and comfort of working from home.

Apart from people who work corporate jobs, most people who build their own business today, especially those who build businesses that run online do so because they want to be able to work from just about anywhere. They want to be able to work and earn a living while working from home.

That’s the dream of most people. They think about the freedom, the comfort, the lack of commute and the time they get to spend with their family, and they just yearn for it.

In this article however, I want to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly side of working from home. So that you know what you’re getting when you work from home, and what you’re depriving yourself when you do so.

There are many important advantages of working from home, and there are huge disadvantages as well.

First of all, let’s talk about the Good. Let’s talk about the advantages of working from home.

The Good

Here are some of the advantages of working from home.

Freedom

The first advantage of working from home is that you have the freedom to work any time you want.

You’re not locked to a schedule. You don’t have to resume work at any give time. You can choose to work in the morning, afternoon, or in the dead of night.

You get to choose your own working hours.

This is one of the biggest advantages to working from home. You choose your own working hours.

It’s a very big advantage, but it can easily turn out as big a disadvantage as you’ll learn later.

Comfort

You gain more comfort from working from home. You don’t have to engage in any of the bells and whistles that’s involved in working in a corporate office.

You don’t have to play dress up every morning so you can get to work. You can work in your pyjamas. Nobody’s going to know. Nobody cares.

You can work in your bedroom, living room, anywhere in your home. Anything goes as long as you get the job done.

So, working from home enables you to gain the most comfort you can ever have in any type of organization.

No Commute

If you work in a corporate office, you have to commute to work every day. You either have to drive your own car through traffic or you have to take the bus or train to your job.

Even though you might end up meeting some nice people and making some friends while using the bus or train to work, you still have to sit and deal with people you may not want to have anything to do with.

If you’re driving your own car, you might have to deal with congested traffic, depending on where you live, and how far your work is from your home.

When you work from home, you won’t have to deal with any of this. Your home is your place of work. You don’t have to take the bus, the train and you don’t have to drive through congested traffic.

You just grab your laptop and start working in your living room, your dining table, your bedroom or maybe your home office.

You don’t have to commute.

Family Time

You get to spend more time with your family. Most people with family like to work from home because of their family.

If you’re a man with wife and kids, you get to spend more time with your beautiful wife and kids.

If you’re a woman with husband and children, you get to spend more time with your husband, and your kids.

This is one of the biggest advantages of working from home.

Now let’s talk about the disadvantages of working from home. Let’s talk about the bad and the ugly aspects of working from home.

The Bad & The Ugly

Here are some of the disadvantages of working from home.

Freedom Equals Complacency

Working from home gives you the freedom to work whenever you want. When that happens, it’s very easy to become complacent.

You don’t know how much work is less work anymore. You work for 2 hours in a day, and you feel you’ve done enough for the day. And that’s because you have the freedom to work any time you want.

That’s one disadvantage of working from home. You easily become complacent on your job.

Lack of accountability

You literally have no one to hold you accountable when you work from home. Especially when you’re running your own business, and not working for a corporation or for another business.

There’s no one to hold you accountable so that you can get your job done in time. And that usually leads to laziness and lots of procrastination.

You always push tasks forward, telling yourself you’ll do it later but you never do it, because there’s no one to hold you accountable.

On the other hand, when you’re working in a corporate building, you have to get to work at a particular time and punch in early, because there’s someone there who’ll hold you accountable for coming late to work.

You can’t just wake up any time and begin work whenever you want. Because of that, work gets done in time, and things move faster when you work in a corporate building with a team.

When you work from home however, you lose all of that. You wake up any time you want, and you work any time you want. That means work gets done late because of laziness and procrastination, which are due to lack of accountability.

Lack of Community and Collaboration

People are more motivated to work when they’re working in a team. You do more work when you’re working with a group of people.

Isolation kills collaboration.

Work gets done faster, ideas are created more easily, and solutions are arrived at quicker, when everybody puts their heads together and comes up with a solution.

There’s team spirit and as a result people are more motivated to do the work.

All of that goes out the window when you’re working from home.

You easily get bored when you’re working by yourself. It’s more difficult to work longer because you’re the only one doing the work.

“Man is by nature a social animal” says Aristotle. That means, we perform better in groups, not individually.

Yes, there are social platforms like Zoom through which employees can communicate and work together online. But nothing beats actually sitting together face to face and coming up with ideas and solutions together.

Nothing beats that.

When you work from home, you lose that.

Conclusion – Build Your Own Business And Be Ready To Go At It Alone, At Least In The Beginning

There are so many advantages to working from home, and there are disadvantages as well.

There’s the good, the bad and the ugly.

You know them now, and you understand what it means to work from home.

Here’s what I believe though. I believe in teamwork. I believe more work gets done when people work together.

However, here’s one thing you must know. You can never become rich by working for someone else.

You must start your own business. And sometimes, that means going at it alone for some time.

And that’s fine. When you start a new business, especially an online business like the one I do, sometimes you’re the only one that believes in what you do.

Not until it springs up, and people begin to notice that what you’re doing is incredible. Then they begin to come on board.

You should be ready to go at it alone. At least in the beginning.

As soon as you have the resources to bring in more people into your business, as soon as you have the money, don’t hesitate. Build a team, leverage the expertise of other people.

That’s what will help you to grow faster.
