The 9-5 Job Trap: Why Most People Never Escape

the 9-5 job trap

The fear of leaving the 9-5 life often prevents people from following their dreams and choosing a career that they truly love.

Because right from day one, starting from our parents, society often promotes the idea that a stable job with a steady paycheck is the ideal path to success and happiness. You have to go to school, get a degree, maybe get multiple degrees, masters and doctorate degrees. Then get a job, get the paycheck, then, maybe then you can start a family.

Conditioning by Society

This is the path you were thought to follow right from day one. It’s the only path we know growing up. So, deviating from this path is like rebelling against society, against the values you were thought as a kid, through adulthood.

Even though you know deep inside your soul that your 9-5 job is not what you love, any thought of deviating from that set norm is met with fear and resistance. Because you worry about society. You worry about what your parents will think, what your neighbors might think, what your colleagues might think, what your friends might think. You’re worried about what they might think of you if you choose an unconventional path.

social pressure

And that’s where the problem lies, because the only person’s thought we usually exclude from this thought process is ours. We worry so much about what others might think that we forget to take ourselves seriously. We forget to take our feelings and happiness into account. Even though we think that following and pursuing our dreams is okay and will actually make us happy, we don’t do it because, we’re more afraid of what other people might think about it.

That, my friend, is the real issue.

That’s why most people get’s stuck in a job that they hate doing. That’s why people wake up every morning to the sound of an alarm that they hate so much. That’s why most people leave largely unhappy lives. And that brings us to another “Why”.

The Fear of Failure

Another reason why most people are stuck to their 9-5 job is fear of failure. Failure of that entrepreneurial carrier they want to pursue. A lot of people worry that if they leave their 9-5, that alternative career path or side hustle might not be successful. And if it’s not successful, will result in them struggling financially.

These are valid concerns, I must say.

The issue however is that most people allow this fear to cripple them to the extent of not even starting their own business or side hustle in the first place.

They end up doing that same job that they hate, working the 9-5 everyday for the rest of their lives. Just because they’re afraid of losing the one thing that puts bread on their table.

But is that really the solution? Is that it? Is playing it safe, staying in your comfort zone throughout your life the solution?

I don’t think so.

Start Your Side Hustle Even While Working 9-5

Yes you’re afraid. You’re afraid that if you leave your 9-5 abruptly, and you choose to become an entrepreneur and run your own business. It’s possible that you may not be successful. And if you’re not successful, you’ll struggle financially and may be considered a failure by many.

Like I said earlier, I say again – that fear is invalid. Because you don’t need to leave your 9-5 job before starting your side hustle or business. You don’t need to quit your job before investing in your own business.

You can start right now. Not tomorrow, right now.

I’m going to end this with a quote from John D.Rockeffer that says: “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.”
