Starting an online business can either end with success or failure. The truth is most people that start online businesses and side hustles today usually end up failing at it.

In this article, I’ll try to highlight some of the most crucial reasons why this happens. If you’ve ever started an online business before, and it failed, I’m going to tell you some of the most common reasons why it failed.

Are you ready? Here we go. Here are the reasons.

You didn’t have a clear blueprint of what you need to do

There are so many people that start online businesses without even knowing how to run an online business.

I know when I started my first blog, I knew nothing about blogging. But I just started, and that blog failed woefully.

But I learned a lot from starting it, and today, I still rely on those experiences through failure.

Even though I learned from the failure, it’s still probably the number one reason why most online businesses fail. Most people who start it don’t know what they’re doing.

They just go ahead and start because other people are doing it as well.

Nevertheless, that’s not really a bad thing. If I didn’t start that failed blog, I’d not have the experience and the knowledge I have today.

So, even though you’re very likely to fail if you don’t have the knowledge and the blueprint before getting started, you still learn a lot from the process.

Poor Marketing Knowledge – You didn’t have the right skills to run the business

Offline marketing and online marketing is not the same. The type of marketing you need to do when you run an online business, and the one you need to do when you run an offline business is not the same.

When you run an offline business, most of the marketing you need to do usually rests on the location you pick.

You pick a good location, and you build a good business with good customer service, people will stop and patronize you, because you’re located in a very good place with lots of pedestrians passing by.

On the other hand, when you build an online business, especially when you running it on a newly built website with a brand new domain, nobody’s going to find that website. Nobody’s going to find it, until you market it properly.

You have to do some search engine optimization so that people can find it on search engines like Google. You have to do social media marketing so that people can find you on social media.

You also have to learn how to do email marketing as well.

You have to learn how to do all this and do them well so that you can attract consistent traffic or people to your business.

Without this knowledge, and without the right online marketing strategy, your business is very likely to fail no doubt.

You wanted to do it alone

If you don’t have the right skills to run the business, if you don’t have the right blueprint to follow as you craft out the business, the best thing you can do is seek the help of people already successful in that particular type of business.

The one reason why most people fail is because they don’t have the right skill, they don’t have the blueprint to follow, and yet, they never seek help.

They want to do it alone. They don’t buy courses. They don’t get coaches and mentors. They don’t get any of that. They just go in blind hoping to do it alone.

Sometimes, people succeed when they go through this route of doing it alone, and learning by trial and error.

When you go through this route however, you have a long learning curve. You fail a lot, and that failure might make you quit.

So before you start a new online business or when you start a new online business, if you have the money or resources, try as much as possible to get a coach, a mentor. Buy courses that gives you the exact blueprint of what you’re trying to do.

So that you don’t make most of the mistakes your predecessors have made, but just go on doing the right things and achieving the right results.

If you have the means, never try to do it alone. Seek help. It will be much easier for you to go on, and you’ll achieve success faster, when you have someone or a team besides you, guiding your every step towards success.

You weren’t consistent

The attention spam of online consumers is very short. That’s why platforms like TikTok was created. People find it hard to focus on content for more than 60 seconds at a stretch unless, it’s something really funny or something that really addresses a unique problem that they have.

And because people’s attention span is so short, they’ll quickly forget you if you’re not always in their face with new stuff about your business.

Every online business depends so much on content. You need to have your content in people’s faces consistently.

If you’re not always putting out content, and reminding people of your business, they’ll forget about you and move on to something else or to another business that offers the same things you offer.

And it’s all because of the short attention span. We just can’t help ourselves but to find something new to pay attention to.

If you’re not consistent as a creator, and consistently put content out there that promotes your business on your blog, website, social media, your audience are going to forget you.

And that’s another main reason most online businesses fail. It’s due to lack of consistency.
