AI content writing tools like ChatGPT can now rival freelance writers, maybe even surpass them, because within minutes these tools can be used to write several articles on any given topics, provided you feed them with the right prompts.

And unlike older writing tools like article spinners that didn’t produce grammatically correct and cohesive sentences, paragraphs and essays, present AI writing tools don’t have the same failings.

So, the question is, is it still worth it to become a freelance writer? Is freelance writing still worth it in this age of AI?

Freelance writing is one of the most popular ways people have been writing for a living online. It simply involves someone or a business hiring you to help them write a blog post, an email, social media post, an eBook and so on.

You write on whatever topic it is you’re told to write about, and you get paid once you complete the writing.

It has always been a very lucrative way of making money online. The most popular freelance writing gig is the writing of blog posts for popular blogs.

Most popular blogs today publish tens and maybe even hundreds of blog posts per month. The more blog posts they publish, the more money they make.

Most of these blogs have inhouse writers that writes these blog posts for them. However, they also have freelance writers from all over the world that work remotely in various places.

And these freelance writers are paid per each blog post or article they write.

Most blog owners hire freelance writers for many reasons. One reason is because there’s less hassle that goes with it. There are no attachments. No paperwork. When you hire a freelance writer, they’re not under any form of employment under you.

It’s like a contract job. Once it’s over, all ties between you and them are severed. So, it’s not as if they’re under any type of employment under you.

You can use them for one project, or you can use them for several. It all depends on you and what you need them for.

When you hire an inhouse writer on the other hand, they’re under employment. So, you have to take care of them as your employee, and deal with all the headache that goes with hiring an employee in your business.

That’s why most businesses and blog owners prefer hiring freelance writers.

As a Freelance writer however, you also have many benefits. The main one is that you can work whenever you want, and wherever you want.

You can work from your home, from your car, from Starbucks, from wherever you want to work. And you can work whenever you want to work, as long as you meet the schedule and requirements of the person or organization hiring you. That’s why it’s called freelance.

Now, the question is:

Is freelance writing still worth it in this age of AI writing tools like ChatGPT?

Well the answer is not a simple Yes or No answer. Although I’ve always had my personal opinion towards freelance work right from day one.

I believe in building my own business, instead of working for someone else. In some sense freelance work is still kind of a type of business. But it’s not a set and forget type of business.

To make money as a freelancer, you have to keep taking jobs and you have to keep working and completing these jobs before you get paid.

However, it’s very lucrative as a job. You stand to make a lot of money if you work as a freelancer.

There are freelance gigs that will get you paid up to $500 per article depending on your portfolio, your experience, the person or organization you’re working for, and so many other factors.

With the introduction of AI content writing tools towards the ending of 2022, it’s now very easy for most of these blogs, people and businesses that hire freelance content writers to just use AI to write the content they used to hire freelance writers to write.

Before now, there were article spinners only that produced gibberish articles, and the only option these blogs and businesses had was to hire freelance writers to write their blog posts and articles.

Now, with the right prompts, ChatGPT and other AI content writing tools can produce well-written, and grammatically correct articles and blog posts that rival those written by freelance writers. And all within seconds or minutes.

I’d say that, right now, most blogs and business still hire freelance writers, but they’ve reduced the number of freelance writers they hire.

Because now, they can hire few freelance writers coupled with AI tools like ChatGPT, and produce as many blog posts and articles that several writers can produce.

So, the truth is, there’s less need for freelance writers now, than there was when there was no ChatGPT and other AI writing tools.

The next question is:

What view should you have towards freelance writing as of this moment?

I’m not a freelance writer. If you are a freelance writer, you have a good portfolio, you have a lot of jobs lined up for you till now, and you’re still making a lot of money from it, then it’s totally okay that you go ahead and keep making that money.

Then I believe it’s totally worth it for you. You should go ahead and do your thing.

On the other hand, if you’ve noticed that the number of jobs you used to get have reduced due to AI tools taking over your jobs, then it’s only right for you to start considering other alternatives to make money as a writer.

One thin you must know is that, AI cannot take over the righting business. Heck, this article you’re reading right now was not written by AI. I myself, Ochuko, I’m the writer behind it.

I still make money online as a writer, and I’m not a freelance writer. That’s because AI written content cannot overthrow human written content.

No matter how good AI written content is, it still lacks that human touch. It lacks that personality that we humans add to it.

Freelance writing is not the only way to make money as a writer. Freelance writers write for blogs and publications and get paid for their work.

If the number of jobs you receive as a freelance writer has reduced due to AI, why not start your own blog or publication and start making money directly yourself as a blogger.

Why not really build your own blogging business? There’s still so much money to be made.

If you create a really good blog, you stand to make a lot of money. You stand to make more money than you were paid as a freelance writer.

So, here is my conclusion

There are still many freelance writing jobs available right now, but their number have dwindled due to AI. Businesses are now employing less freelance writers and using AI tools.

However, that does not limit or reduce the amount of money writers can make online.

You can start your own writing business. You can start your own blog. You can start your own publication, instead of writing for other publications.

You can build your own business as a writer. You’ve just got to start.
