New Pinterest marketers make a lot of mistakes, and I totally understand why they make them. I myself made them too, and I may still be making some.

If you’re new to Pinterest and currently trying to grow on the platform and drive traffic to your blog or website, you might be making some of these mistakes as well.

I want to talk about these mistakes because I made some of these mistakes myself and it’s only right for me to talk about them and list them here so that you can learn from them.

If you really want to grow on the platform and achieve your goals, it’s very important that you know these things.

So, here are 8 common mistakes you might already be making if you’re a new Pinterest marketer.

Over-pinning

Over-pinning is one mistakes new Pinterest marketers make a lot, and I totally understand why they make it.

You see? There’s a common misconception that the more you pin, the more the Pinterest algorithm is going to favor you.

But that’s not really true at all. Maybe it used to be so. Right now, I don’t believe the Pinterest algorithm works like that.

You don’t have to pin 20 or 50 times a day to get noticed on Pinterest. You just have to pin regularly.

3 pins a day is not bad. 5 pins a day is good. What you really want to try to do on Pinterest is grow at a steady natural rate.

And here’s one thing you should also know. The more you try to pin 50 pins in a day, the more the quality of your pins reduces. Because you’re trying to create 50 or 20 pins every day, and I’m sure you won’t be paying much attention to the quality of each pins. Especially when you’re designing these pins yourself.

On the other hand, if you’re pinning 5 pins a day, I’m sure you’ll pay a lot of attention to the messaging and design on each pin you put out there.

You see, on Pinterest, it’s all about quality over quantity.

Pinning the same content over and over

This is one more mistake most new Pinterest marketers make. I’m not saying you can’t pin the same blog post ever again after pinning it once.

That’s not what I’m saying. But some people pin the same blog post over and over again, the same day.

If you pin the same post over and over again, especially on the same day, I believe that constitutes spamming.

I’ve seen certain Pinterest accounts that are not just pinning the same blog post repeatedly, but they’re also using the same pin.

They don’t even bother to design a new pin for it.

If you’re doing this, you’re making a big mistake. And you’re jeopardizing your Pinterest account.

Designing and pinning ugly pins

I’ve talked about this in a previous blog post before. Pin design matters on Pinterest. Your pin design has to be great.

Don’t just put anything out there. Make sure your pin looks good. It should be something people want to click.

Don’t just slap colors all over the place. Use good readable large fonts. Your Pinterest pins shouldn’t be too busy. They should be nice and simple.

If you want to learn how to design beautiful pins for your Pinterest account, go through this separate blog post I wrote specifically for that.

Hunting for group boards

The thing is that group boards where formerly a thing. Since most of these group boards already had so many followers, if you get your pin on them, it means your pin will be seen by all of these followers, and that could kickstart your own new account pretty quickly.

But the thing right now, is that the Pinterest algorithm has changed and moved away from that.

It’s still okay to get into group boards, but that’s really not going to do you significant good anymore.

Don’t spend your time chasing group boards to join. Instead, spend that time creating quality content, and pinning them to your own boards.

Not posting regularly

Look, I’m not supposed to mention this, but I just feel I have to. You want to use Pinterest to drive traffic and business to your blog or website, but you post every other week.

It’s not going to work. Your account is going to grow like a snail.

If you really want to see real growth as a Pinterest marketer, make sure you pin consistently. Pin daily.

That will tell the algorithm that you mean business, and I’m sure it will reward you with more visibility to your pins.

Not optimizing their pin SEO

Pinterest is not just a social media platform, it’s an image search engine. You must optimize your pins so they can rank on the platform just like content ranks on Google over time, and so that people can see them and click through to your blog.

If you’re not optimizing your Pinterest pins with keyword optimized titles and descriptions, you’re making a big mistake.

Not optimizing their board SEO

Same thing goes with your Pinterest boards. Each board have a title, and there’s a place to add a description.

When creating your boards, make sure you use keyword-rich names. Don’t just use random words to name your boards.

After creating a board, click on edit to edit the board. Then add a keyword optimized descriptions.

That, combined with the SEO optimization of your pins, makes it easier for Pinterest to know what your board is all about, what the pins inside is all about, and thus makes it easier for them to rank.

Not Optimizing their profile description SEO

The main Pinterest profile is one place most new Pinterest marketers fail to optimize for SEO.

When people click on your account, it’s the first place they see. It’s also contains the main message of your account.

And thus, it would be a very great disservice to your account if it’s not well optimized for search.

So, when writing your Pinterest profile description, make sure it includes relevant keywords that tells the Pinterest algorithm and people, what your account is all about.

Not doing that, is a very big mistake. And I see it a lot. I see accounts with descriptions, but it doesn’t contain the main keywords in their niche.

Some don’t even have anything written in their descriptions. And that is a huge mistake to make.

Rounding Up

I’ve said it time and again, that Pinterest is one of the best platforms you can use to drive traffic and business to your blog or website as a marketer, and as a business owner.

The mistakes above will prevent that from happening. They’ll slow your growth and may prevent you from achieving your goals.

Stop making them as soon as possible, and you’ll see consistent growth in your Pinterest marketing.
